In two days we went from “let’s pause large AI models trainings for six months” to “Shut down all the large GPU clusters. …be willing to destroy a rogue datacenter by airstrike”.
And that’s in Time article, for crying out loud.
No matter how much Eliezer Yudkowsky is respected in the community, it has already gone beyond the brink of adequacy. Sounds close to Russian tv hosts threatening the world with missiles.
On twitter, Eliezer literally says, that in his opinion if some country is not signing the agreement to shut down such AI development, then other countries remain the right to use force.
Just look at this quote from Time article:
Shut down all the large GPU clusters (the large computer farms where the most powerful AIs are refined). Shut down all the large training runs. Put a ceiling on how much computing power anyone is allowed to use in training an AI system, and move it downward over the coming years to compensate for more efficient training algorithms. No exceptions for governments and militaries. Make immediate multinational agreements to prevent the prohibited activities from moving elsewhere. Track all GPUs sold. If intelligence says that a country outside the agreement is building a GPU cluster, be less scared of a shooting conflict between nations than of the moratorium being violated; be willing to destroy a rogue datacenter by airstrike.
I think Eliezer is either hyping or is loosing touch with reality. :D
It is clear that no-one is going to stop trainings, there is literally no way that can happen. I bet some countries (I won’t point fingers) would just ignore any attempts to shut this down.
Time should be ashamed of letting such an article live.
“AI is going to kill us all!!1 We should shut it down!11 And bomb rogue datacenters!”. What a joke :/
P.S. More quotes of Eliezer as a signature of the article:
most likely result of building a superhumanly smart AI, under anything remotely like the current circumstances, is that literally everyone on Earth will die.
If somebody builds a too-powerful AI, under present conditions, I expect that every single member of the human species and all biological life on Earth dies shortly thereafter.
If we actually do this, we are all going to die.
If we go ahead on this everyone will die, including children who did not choose this and did not do anything wrong.
